What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy of detecting and correcting vertebral subluxations by performing safe and specific “manipulations” to the spine.

This allows your body to function at its optimum potential and thus heal itself – the power that made the body, heals the body!

What is a subluxation?
Subluxation is a misalignment of one or more of your vertebrae (spinal bones) that causes interference with your nervous system. This will negatively affect your body’s natural ability to heal itself and reduce its function. This creates what we call “disease,” and creates your symptoms of pain. A subluxation represents how structure affects function.

What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is a safe and specific manipulation or “thrust” that is delivered by hand or instrument to the spine or other joints of the body. The purpose of the adjustment is to correct spinal subluxations and remove the nerve interference so that the body can function and heal itself.

Is chiropractic care safe?
Yes. Current research has shown that chiropractic care is safe and is now considered to be one of the first recommended options in the treatment of back pain instead of surgery. Chiropractic is a conservative form of health care that does not use drugs or surgery for treatment. It relies on the body’s own ability to heal itself by restoring vertebral alignment and function. People of all ages, from infants to the elderly, and those with varying health conditions have seen amazing and successful results with chiropractic.

What is a trigger point?

Trigger points are hyperirritable locations found within muscle that are often associated with palpable nodules that elicit localized pain when palpated or compressed. Trigger points can also refer pain to other locations sometimes distant from where the trigger point is itself. It can affect the range of motion of the muscle and therefore reduce overall range of motion of the surrounding muscles and joints as well. Trigger point massage can help to reduce these nodules and, therefore, reduce the associated pain and improve muscle and joint mechanics. Trigger point massage is essential to be utilized concurrently with chiropractic adjustments.

Can Chiropractic care treat herniated discs?

Chiropractic is a viable option to treat various kinds of injuries to the spine including intervertebral discs. Only MRI studies can show the presence of disc herniations or prolapses. Further studies have shown that 40% of the population have herniated discs in their low back with little to no pain ever being reported. So many of our patients, who have disc bulges and don’t know it, are regularly treated with chiropractic adjustments and do not report aggravations in their condition. For those that do have symptoms, treatment will vary from low impact, conservative types of adjustments to adjunctive therapies, such as interferential stimulation, to specific stretches or exercises to help alleviate their symptoms.

Can people with spinal fusions receive Chiropractic care?

As with patients with disc herniations, special care is needed to treat those that have spinal fusions. Fusions can occur as the result of surgery or severe degenerative arthritic changes over time and will greatly affect spinal range of motion in that area in a negative way. It will also greatly impact surrounding muscles and joints as the lack of mobility caused by the fusion will eventually cause greater wear and tear on these joints and muscles. Treatment to these surrounding structures can reduce the impact and effects that fusions can cause and many patients will see positive results from chiropractic care. But actual adjustments to the fused areas are not advised.
